At the time, this mural could be found at the Ajuinlei in Ghent. Located in the city centre, the wall offered itself as a perfect canvas for this creative experiment in collaboration with Poetry Centre Ghent.
With the poetry wall we wanted to explore the creative application of 'typography'. In collaboration with Teletext we invited the literary scientist Kila van Der Starre. She chose for us two beautiful pieces of poetry by the Dutch poet Ida Gerhardt and the Flemish poet Christine D'haen.
Sneller dan de mensen zijn de herten,
sneller dan de herten is de zwaluw;
sneller dan de zwaluw mijn gedachten,
- Ida Gerhardt
Maar rondomheengerold Nacht met elastisch galactisch lichaam
- Christine D’haen
In order to realise the project, we asked the Brussels giant Solo Cink, an expert in calligraphy, to create his visual interpretation of this text. This resulted in this beautiful work of art. He rejected the traditional form in which our writing is usually structured. The result resembles an amulet or mandala in which the poems are creatively written.
With this project we wanted to show that creativity comes from our own interpretation of the placement and design of words. Creativity is also sometimes about letting go of the status quo. Even something universal like writing can lose its form and meaning.
